February 28 New Blog SiteI have found that this blog site doesn't work too well with my Mac for some odd reason. So we have created a new blog at http://lifeastherobinsons.blogspot.com/
Please come check us out there and make sure to add the new address to your favorites. :) Zion Spring CenturyDang what a girl page, pink hearts....I guess I can still blog about my awesome ride last Saturday. Much to Marissa's shagrin, the cycling season has began once again. It started off with the Amgen Tour of California, one week of recording this stage race on my favorite channel, Verses. Throughout the rest of the year Verses is the lamest channel with fishing, hunting and ultimate fighting. I mean really who wants to see dudes beating the tar out of one another when you can watch dudes in Lycra and shaved legs....sign me up.:) I remember getting into a debate when a coworker talked about NASCAR, what a lame sport, driving around in circles...what a waste of time. I believe Marissa feels the same way about my sport. I do, at times, see her endulge in a stage or two so I know it really is a love hate relationship. And she remarked under her breathe that she thinks Levi Leipheimer was cute.
So there I was, headed down to St. George with Gary. For the first time in my Zion Century experience Marissa and the kids stayed behind as it would have been too uncomfortable for her to travel. It was an odd feeling leaving behind my number 1, 2 and 3 biggest fans and I felt a bit sad. I picked up Gary and we hit the Wendy's for a quick lunch break. As I retreated to the restroom for a quick break before the long haul a man asked me if I was "that guy who just returned form Brazil after running 135 miles?" I replied no but I did in fact know him. For a moment I felt like a Jarom groupie and in a weird way it felt good. The man said he knew Gary and saw us together and assumed I was Jarom. I washed my hands and kind of chuckled, thinking to myself, "Wow Jarom is like the celebrity of Payson", but then I remembered Gary Coleman lives in the area as well and really who can compete with "WhatChoo Talkin Bout Willis". Anyway Gary and I made hast and arrived in St.George praying for sunshine as we had driven through storm after storm. Never the less it was warm and that was OK with me.
Saturday we woke and headed over to the Bloomington park and headed out. Gary and I were first out of the gate and held our position for about 25 miles. As we pulled into the second rest stop and were quickly passed by Team Heath. That would be the last time I saw Heath until I was heading into Zion Park. Upon the next stop mile 35 or so the weather was getting dark and it began to rain. Gary turned back and got the car and became my own personal STAG supporter. I pressed on, cold and wet, not wanting to quite because of what the 'Payson All-star' did in Brazil. I climbed the 2 mile hill and hit the so called flat lands. Just about that time Heath flew past me in like a lightning flash headed in the opposite direction. Jarom then pulled up behind me and gave me another dose of encouragement. He had come out to pick up Mahogani at mile 12, and 57 miles later here he is. He told me he had left Sandra shopping and thought he would come out and find us. Little did he realize he had left her shopping for like 3 hours. I made the turn around at Zion and picked up the pace for the return. Just before the 2 mile down hill section, Gary pulled up and filled my bottles. I told him I was not going to stop any more and to meet me at the finish line. I got lost on my way back, getting stuck within the labyrinth of trails but eventually found the right one. With about a half mile to go I spotted Jarom doing what he does best, running. I spoke to him for a moment and carried on. I finished the ride with about a 6 1/2 hour ride time and 105 miles under my wheels.
The first ride of the season done. I raced back to Orem just in time to kiss Brooklyn goodnight. It was a good ride. I love the feeling of completing something that challenges me. I am grateful for the support of my family and I know Marissa bites her lip every time I go, but she is the first to hug me and tell me good job.
February 07 Wuve, Twue Wuve....Starting Sunday night Savannah and I were struggling with some kind of stomach bug. Savannah was puking all night. I luckily got through the night by taking an anti-nausea pill. By Tuesday we both felt better, but not 100%. Then Tuesday night Savannah was puking by 2 am again. Blu doesn’t do well with throw up so I got up to help and I almost lost my dinner. So gratefully he sent me back to bed with another pill. Being eight months pregnant and throwing up, I am sure just wouldn’t go over well. I ended up with diarrhea, stomach cramping, exhaustion, and contractions. By Wednesday at lunch things weren’t getting much better for me. When Blu called from work to check on us, I just started crying. He immediately calmed me down like usual and said he would be home in an hour to take care of things and for me not to worry. Blu truly is the love of my life and the greatest man ever. He came home and said he had cleared his schedule and that he could miss school tonight. He is so amazing when I am sick. He tells me to relax and puts me to bed. He closes the bedroom door and instantly goes to cleaning the house and doing laundry. He always says you can't start feeling better until things around you are clean. He opened some of the windows to freeze out the germs and Lysol’s everything. Usually he is a great surface cleaner, but he really deep cleaned and I found him even dusting. For dinner he headed out to the store and bought tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. He came home and made a wonderful HOMEMADE soup. He then gave me a priesthood blessing followed by the girls who then wanted one too. Brooklyn asked “Mom, why do always cry during priesthood blessings?” ☺ I am so grateful to have such a wonderful caring husband who honors his priesthood and is always ready and willing to give me a blessing when I need one. Blu has always been this way when I get sick. I really hope I am just as helpful to him when he isn’t feeling well. February 04 Oh Now I Get ItMore now than ever Blu and I have been focusing on following the words of our prophets by having family home evening. This past weekend was our stake conference and one of the major themes of the adult session was to not only hold FHE, but to make Monday just as spiritual as Sunday. It is neat for us to sit back and listen to the stories Brooklyn brings home from Primary and the ones Savannah has remembered that we talk about. I recall when Blu and I taught primary, after finding out all the little secrets of our students home life, we marveled at how much they knew, which at times was more than us. We spent some nights searching for references to what they told us and more often than not the stories held true. I remember thinking how I wanted to be able to teach my children so much at home and not rely solely on the primary teachers to teach it all. Slowly but surely Blu and I made it a priority to hold FHE each Monday night. Funny how something so simple can at times be so difficult. And funny how something so difficult can turn into something so wonderful. With Blu's schedule being chaotic at best we look forward to this time to spend as a family. We have done some pretty interesting things these last couple of weeks and feel you can find spirituality in some of the darnedest places. Once we found ourselves wandering through the Bean Museum after a brief discussion about the creation of the world. Oh thank heavens the girls didn't question why these animals were all dead. A week later we had been talking about our bodies and keeping them healthy so we went to the recreation center and went swimming. And now tonight with the passing of President Hinckley and the press conference of our newly called prophet we talked about the past prophets of the church and practiced the new prophets name of President Monson. We had finally got Savannah to the point that she could identify who President Hinckley was (or as she calls him President Hinkey) now the teaching continues, introducing her and Brooklyn to President Monson. :) It is weird to now see that their is value in FHE. {Yes, Dad all those years did teach me something. Even though I am 31 now} February 01 What's NewWell, there is the fact that I have moved over to what they say is the new 'hip' world of technology. I got a MacBook, therefore making me 'cool'. Except for the fact everything is new and I feel like an idiot. I mean, when I was in school I took keyboarding, not computers! At least the typewriters were electronic, so I am not that old. ;) I do remember us having an Apple IIe computer, but my dad was the one that knew everything, I didn't. I remember my older brother Jarom making the coolest program on a DOS file where a guy was to jump on a trampoline, but when he put the program into play the guy stayed in the air and the trampoline moved up and down underneath him. LOL We still laugh about it. Even though right now that is how I am feeling with this Mac. I must say I am enjoying it, but the learning curve will take some time. I made my first iMovie. I edited our home video and put our recent California trip on DVD. The girls LUV it and ask to watch it multiple times a day. Today I noticed that somehow I deleted/lost all of my internet favorites/bookmarks. If any of you find them please let me know, because it took me hours to even get them on this thing in the first place. :) Just over a week ago we also traded in our Chrysler Town and Country and got my dream minivan. Isn't that the weirdest thing to say... a dream minivan. But seriously, in the world of minivans and kids, the Honda Odyssey is the ultimate. If you have young kids and are currently pregnant (which both apply to me, minivans are a necessity). You don't have to bend down to get yourself and the other toddlers in and out of the car. BTW, that is nearly impossible in my current state. Also the windows on the sliding doors roll down. This is one of the most amazing features since the girls love the wind blowing in their hair, even when it is 24 degrees out. I could go on and on, but it comes down to the fact that it is made for families and is a Honda and I adore Honda's. They are quality vehicles that last and have great resale. I am now just over 32 weeks along with little Boston. I went to the doctor this week and discussed my current pain situation. We think I have something called Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD). This is where one of the pregnancy hormones that help loosen your ligaments for labor is on high and loosens/opens your pelvis too early. Therefore causing horrible stabbing pains in your pelvis. There are many times I try to stand up and can not walk it hurts so badly. I have had the same type of pain with all of my pregnancies, but this one seems to be worse. My OB said to take it easy and she remembered prescribing a walker to one of her patients with the same problem years ago. I sure hope that doesn't happen! I am currently considering hiring someone to clean my house, I just can't keep up. Blu is a wonderful help, but right now he is just so busy. Blu has doubled up his classes so that he can graduate sooner Now he has school twice a week, FT job, private clients, and bishopric duties. Infact tonight he is up Payson Canyon at Camp Maple Dell with the scouts for the Klondike (crazy snow camp) and when he gets home tomorrow afternoon he gets to shower, change, and head over to his 4 hours of stake conference meetings. What a trooper! The girls miss him so much. Most days when he gets ready to leave Savannah says, "But Daddy, I want to keep you." It is the cutest thing ever and just breaks Blu's heart. :( The snow keeps falling and I can't say I am sick of it yet. We haven't had a winter like this since I was a kid. I would also much rather have snow alternating with beautiful blue skies than our more recent winters filled with inversions. I remember a few years ago we had an inversion in January that lasted for 17 straight days. Really not seeing the sun for that long can drive a person insane, let alone, not being able to see across the street. It is just too claustrophobic for me. January 19 The Way IS HappinessOne of the most common questions people ask each other when they are getting acquainted is “What do you do?” Usually, they are asking about a person’s job, occupation, or career when they ask this. While this may be interesting information, what really makes each of us unique is not so much what we do, but HOW we do what we do. Whether you are answering phones, flipping burgers, trading stocks, teaching school, raising kids, flying airplanes, or leading a country; How are you doing what you do? Do you do it with a cheerful attitude and gratitude, or with grumpiness and cynicism? Whatever you are doing today, do it with enthusiasm and find the happiness in it. An interesting point about happiness that I wanted to pass along is that many people spend much of their time and effort trying to find the way to happiness. This can be very elusive, because happiness is not to be found “out there” somewhere. I think that we can’t find the way TO happiness because the way IS happiness. Happiness is a choice, and can be the WAY to create other great things in life. I also believe that happiness, peace, and joy is your natural state – the way you are when there are not disturbances to that natural state. Sometimes we allow life’s circumstances to lead us into the kind of thinking that disturbs our natural happy state. When you have a choice (and you always do) – choose happiness. As I work with people to help them see how to accomplish happiness in their life, I always emphasize the fact that it is a choice. Some people challenge this idea, and think that I am asking them to “fake it”. I heard for an interview in a pod cast that faking it is really just practicing. You’re practicing how to be happy, so you’re ready when you really are. You can either practice how to be depressed and miserable, how to be disheartened and resentful, or you can practice how to be joyful. Either way, you’re going to get really good at one of them. It’s not likely you will be good at both—each requires too much commitment in time and energy. What makes me happy? Time, time with my wife, girls, relatives, friends and time on my bike. See the world and enjoy. Blu December 23 Pre-Christmas FestivitiesWe had such a great surprise the other day....Santa showed up at our front door ringing his bell.
The girls were so excited. Although Brooklyn was a little taken back and hid for awhile. She was so nervous at first that it was just like the scene from 'A Christmas Story' where Ralphie just agrees with Santa's idea of a football because he was so nervous and awe struck.
Savannah just said, "Hi Santa!" happily and asked for a pink balloon.
He came with bags of candy for the girls and wanted to hear what they wanted for Christmas. Now Savannah yells "Santa!" at every visitor that comes to the front door. Today Blu decided to be his domestic self and make our first real turkey dinner. We usually just attend dinners at other's homes where we don't have to put forth any knowledge or effort. I must say we did a good job, it was wonderful. I am so glad Blu sets goals to be more domestic because I sure don't. I don't mind eating other people's turkey and dealing with Mac and Cheese and PB&J's here.
Here are the girls in their 'Sunday Christmas Best'
Man, they are beautiful. Savannah made it the whole block with her hat on. Brooklyn didn't even make it through Sacrament meeting even after being bribed with a treat if she left it on. She always has to be in control, that one.
December 18 Disney MagicDecember 12 Life's A BeachWell there are some things that you just HAVE to blog about.
First off...last night we popped by a Carl's Jr for a quick and late dinner here in Southern California. After we finished Blu noticed this sticker by the door.
WHAT?! Are you kidding me!
Besides that we had one lady sitting by us that at first we thought was just on her bluetooth, but later realized she was just having a great conversation with herself.
Today while driving on I-405 home from Hunington Beach we saw this...
Blu was a little too excited to take the girls to the beach. He started out driving west down the street thinking it would at some point just run into the ocean. So we got in the usual 'Listen to me and look at a map' arguement. By the time we finally found Hunington Beach the girls were hungry, but easily distracted by the blue ocean.
Blu then didn't realize that the ocean water was at his ankles, which meant it was at Savannah's knees and her capri's got all wet. Seconds after he let go of her and she took a header in the ocean. All the while I was trying to record the first memerable event with a video and still camera.
So Savannah finished the day in her jacket and diaper.
We also looked for sea shells and made a sand snowman.
December 11 Disney, Disney, Disney
Here we are in the middle of our California trip…
It seemed like it took forever for us to get here with pit stops in St. George and Vegas. It was hard on the girls, mostly Brooklyn, to understand that even though we were leaving Friday, we wouldn’t be at Disneyland for 3 days. She woke Friday wanting to wear flip flops and up sleeve shirts (Brooklyn’s term for short sleeve shirt) before we even left Orem.
Sunday morning we woke up and all got dressed for church. We attended Anaheim 1st Ward. It looked like the 2nd counselor of their ward was much younger than Blu, so he doesn’t feel as odd now. We talked to a few of the congregation members and found out that even Donny and Marie Osmond have attended that ward when they have been in town, sadly no star sightings for us that day.
Monday morning we woke eager to enter the Magic Kingdom, and magic it was. Disneyland is totally decked out for Christmas. Upon entry there is a huge, probably 100 foot, Christmas tree. Main Street is completely decorated with tinsel, garland, lights, and piped with Christmas music. The Fantasyland castle even has snow and icicles. How do they do it? There is such attention to detail. When we were lucky enough to see characters they were also in the Christmas spirit wearing holiday attire.
Because we knew the Nemo submarine ride was popular we first ran to the line. Everything was going well until Savannah noticed the captain standing with his head hidden up at the surface compartment steering. She freaked, thinking it was half of a man. We spent the rest of the ride trying our best to distract her from the horrifying scene, yet trying to pay attention to the cool ride.
Savannah and I went back to the hotel for naps while Blu and Brooklyn stayed and went on some bigger and faster rides. Brooklyn made friends with everyone while in line. At one point she asked one of her new friends if she could go on the ride with them and have her dad ride alone.
The first night we watched the incredible parade on the front row of Main Street. It was inspiring to watch our girl’s faces and eyes light up as they saw all of the characters, lights, and dancers come by. We were brought to tears when the finale of fireworks was put on to Christmas music. The place really is magical.
Day two was a bit more challenging with a poor night sleep. The Magic Kingdom became more of a struggle than enjoyment. After naps we hit the rides hard and heavy and finished off strong.
Tomorrow we plan on taking a break from Disneyland’s fun and taking the girls to the beach to relax a bit. About 8 ½ years ago while Blu and I were dating we came down here with Jarom and Sandra. During that trip we went to Huntington Beach. Blu had never been to the beach before and he told me then that he wanted to bring his children here someday, to see and to be a part of something more than Utah County. We are both excited to share these special moments and memories with the girls now. Who thought those many years ago we would be here today. We are having a blast. We will most likely need a vacation from our vacation when we get home.
